Recce and risk assessment

A recce is a list of everything you need to have and what you need to do. It is all to do with the location. It involves things like what to take, who you have to contact, sound, transport/access, camera/lighting, things for the director and food/accommodation.

You would need to take a camera, microphone, mobile phone, notepad, risk assessment, directions, student ID card, brief and a checklist.

With talking to people you need to confirm ownership, exchange details, explain intentions, discuss fees/contract, editorial policy, are passes needed, availability, timings, local events, dress code, copyright issues, children's details.

When thinking about transport/access you need to include landmarks (for directions), neighbour disturbance, risk of trespass, internal access, vehicle access, toilets, traffic control, shelter, safety for hazardous environment, tidal waters and boats/safety.

You'll also have to think about camera/lighting like the position of the sun, window direction, power supply, size of location, strobing,TV/computer screen, is floor level, secure place for it, cables and smoke alarms/sprinklers.

With sound you have to listen, look for traffic/aircraft/school noise, see if there are any electrical hazards, weather/background/air conditioner music can impact sound and wooden floors can overpower the sound.

Things for director: photos, GVs/top shots, cutaways, backgrounds, events and additional contributors.

Food and accommodation are vital to sustain filming at a maximum ability.
