My proposal and treatment for my short film idea

3 act structure

Beginning

Middle

End

Act 1- equilibrium- the location and the characters are introduced. By the end we should know the characters goal.

Act 2- conflict- what is going to stop the character achieving that goal.

Act 3- resolution- how to end the film, by achieving their goal or not.

Characters

Matt- he cant stop apologising even for things that aren't his fault
Adam- he thinks matt should stop apologising

Location

A building (office), a train, a field and a street.

The goal

Adam wants to stop Matt apologising.

The conflict

Matt feels too rude and socially anxious to be persuaded by Adam

The resolution

Adam pushes Matt too far so instead of apologising he confronts Adam which accidentally cures him.

What is a proposal?
  • Its purpose is to sell the idea
  • Used to gain funding
  • Has to explain the concept
  • Make the idea sound interesting and exciting
  • Must be achievable
What do I include?

  • Your names, contacts and company name
  • A working title for the project
  • The intended audience
  • Brief explanation of the concept
  • Brief description of the main sequences and characters
  • Names of any other major creative participants in the projects
  • Any major technical or stylistic considerations (e.g. a particular visual style, special effects, how sound will be employed, act)
  • One side of A4
My proposal

Dear sir/madam
My name is David Neale, writing to you to persuade you to fund my short film idea.

The working title is "Sorry." The intended audience is men aged between 22-25. I made it so that both characters are relatable to people who work in an office or something similar to an office.

The basic concept of my film is that Matt can't stop apologising even for things that are not his fault. Then Adam sees Matt doing this and decides to make Matt stop. The attempts fail because Matt feels too rude and socially anxious to be persuaded by Adam. In the end Adam pushes Matt too far so instead of apologising he confronts Adam which accidentally cures him.

This film is a realistic idea as there are no visual or special effects required.

Yours sincerely, David Neale

Writing a treatment

The treatment is the development of your idea from your proposal. It should include:
  • An indication of the size and content of the product.
  • An initial script/storyline.
  • An estimated cost for production.
  • An idea of the personnel involved in the project.
  • A contingency plan.
  • Any research carried out for the production.
Introduction

This is a short opening paragraph that summarises the original proposal and the approach that you will take to develop the idea. Use this opening section to sell your idea.

Outline script

In order to understand what actual resources you may need, and the time line of your work, you will need to produce an outline script. This brings together your ideas into a format that clearly demonstrates how the product will progress, and what it will look like when it is finished. Have a clear picture of your media product.

Outline budget

It is essential that you understand the budgetary requirements of your planned project. You will have to produce a realistic budget for the product that you are producing. You must use real examples of equipment hire and other costs when developing your budget.

Talent

Who is doing what mention who is doing what in your film-acting, voice-actor, presenting, this will give the client a clear understanding how your film will look and who is going to be involved.

Production staff

Who's working on the project-breakdown of the crew.

Contingency

Things can go wrong, so it is vital you prepare a backup plan-various reason things go wrong- as class first what those reason are.
  • Client changes their mind about the content of the product after agreement has been reached.
  • The price of materials or equipment changes once production has started.
  • An actor is ill or they can't make it due to other commitments.
  • Equipment breaks down during shoot.
  • Severe weather conditions/or just change of weather means continuenty is difficult to maintain
Contingency planing is extremely important-it is there, as a safety net when things go wrong-all production must include a contingency plan.

Research

Include any conducted research. This might link to similar products that you have looked at, online research of articles or surveys carried out.

My treatment

The working title of my film is "Sorry" which is a about a man called "Matt" who keeps saying sorry even when he shouldn't. Then Adam comes along and attempts to stop him but this pushes Matt to far and instead of apologising to Adam he argues with him which cures him.

The resources needed are a pile of a bag, a football. This film begins by Matt knocking into a stranger and then apologising. After that he is on a bench at a train station sitting on a seat, when a stranger moves his bag that's on the seat next to him, and the stranger sits next to him. Then Matt apologises. Another stranger then cuts in line, after which he replies sorry. A football is kicked at him which knocks Matt to the ground. Then he apologises. Adam then picks him up and Matt apologises to him. Adam then talks about how Matt shouldn't keep apologising. Then Matt says sorry and Adam sighs. While walking home he says how he needs to learn to be meaner and the problem is that he is too nice. He then talks about how he knows how to be dominant and should learn from his brilliant life but is cut of by Matt saying sorry to a stranger who bumped into him. Adam then tells Matt to hit him but Matt refuses. Adam then says how he can adapt to do anything he puts his mind to and that Matt should learn from him and then accidentally steps on Matt's foot. After which Matt says too Adam how his life isn't perfect, how his girlfriend cheats on him, how he has bad grades and how much of a bad friend he is. After Adam says that was mean. Then Matt says sorry.

I need a budget of £5. We need money to have access to a train, which would roughly cost £5. The camera, microphone, tripod, dolly and any other equipment can be borrowed for free. The crew already own a bag and a football so that would be free. The actors are also working for free.

We are having two actors in the film which include Daniel J Layton as Matt and Thomas Ridgewell as Adam. The extras will include members of the crew to reduce the size of participant in the film.

The crew consists of a director, producer, cinematographer, script writer, editor and a sound guy. All of these will not need to be paid as they are colleagues. The director will be me, David Neale. The producer is Anthony Mason. The cinematographer is Chris Martin. The make-up/costume designer is Danni Edgeworth. The script writer is Joseph Mander. The editor is Keaton Gover. The sound guy is Sam Hill. The lighting is controlled by Daniel Daykin.

If the client were to pull out it wouldn't affect the film as much because this film is very low budget. If the prices where to change it still wouldn't affect us because we are only buying a train ticket. If an actor can't make it then we could always make a member of the crew fulfil their duties or reschedule. If the equipment were to break during a shoot then we would have to reschedule for another date until it is fixed or replaced. If weather was affecting outdoor  scenes then we could change the location to inside or wait till the weather blows off.

There have been a few short films labelled sorry and have reached a large audience the online networking. Although they were all from a Muslim culture and had different concepts so it will not clash with mine. On youtube I found a one minute clip with a very similar concept but the overall story and conclusion are total opposites. That clip had almost 100,000 views so that could make my concept seem popular as well.
