Analysing Marnie- Alfred Hitchcock (1964)

Cinematography

The film starts with an extreme close-up of a yellow bag which makes the audience believe that the bag is important. As the scene progresses the camera zooms out to a mid shot of a woman. This will make the audience believe the woman also play an important part of this opening scene. During the whole of the first scene the camera has a tracing shot to follow her while she is walking. This makes the audience feel as though we are walking behind her. After that the camera stops following her to make a long shot of her putting her bag down and waiting for a train.

After that the next scene starts by a medium close-up of a man saying "robbed" to make us believe that the woman had robbed him and the contents of what she stole was in the bag. While he explains it he points to a safe with nothing in it. This reveals that the stolen goods were in that safe. During this scene it uses a reverse shot to suggest that they the man and the officers are having a conversation. During the conversation they use mid shots to suggest that they are at ease with each other. During this conversation there is a mid shot of Sean Connery coming in while the man is talking. This makes the audience think he is an important character. When the man notices him there is a pan of the man walking towards Sean Connery. Then the man takes Sean Connery to the side to have a conversation. At the start of the conversation there is a medium wide shot to reveal both characters in frame. As the conversation progresses the is a mid shot of the man talking. This makes the conversation focus on the man. When the man describes the woman he says "she was so kind, so nice, so..." Then there is a zoom to a close-up of Sean Connery's face as he says "resourceful?" This emphasises the way the Sean Connery says this.

Analysing This is England

The opening scene is a music video of the most notorious event from England in the 1980's. All the credits in this have numbers connected to them. This is to represent dog tags as there was a major war in the 1980's. This just illustrates how much the director had an influence of this war, when making this opening scene. This opening scene also had an influence from the music. When the music said give it to me one time there was a collision of some sort. When he said give it to me two times there would be two collisions and then again with three times. This film is linked to racism in the 1980's which is revealed slightly because it showed events that were heavily linked to racism. If you didn't know about these event then you wouldn't know they were linked with racism.
